Population growth spurs surge to Asia's cities

Women push babies in prams through a Beijing park during a public holiday.

Somewhere in the world -- Asia would be a good bet -- a pregnant woman is carrying a baby destined to be the planet's seven billionth human being.

The historic baby is due to be born on October 31, the United Nations Population Division predicts.

Bookmakers have made Asia the hot favourite for the symbolic arrival, possibly for no better reason than that the sun rises in the east, giving Asian mothers a head start.

If they are right, another reasonable bet would be that the baby will grow up to be part of another historic demographic shift and live in a city.

By mid-2022 there will for the first time be more people living in Asia's urban areas than in the countryside as "a tidal wave of humanity" surges towards the cities in search of jobs and a better life, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) says.

The statistics are startling:
-- About 1.1 billion people will migrate from the countryside into Asia's cities in less than 20 years, according to the ADB. That's about 137,000 every day.
-- India needs to build the equivalent of a city of Chicago every year to provide enough commercial and residential space for its migrants, according to McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) research.
-- One hundred new cities from China will join the list of the top 600 urban centres -- which generate about 60 percent of global GDP -- in the next 15 years, says MGI.

The UN's choice of which baby to dub the world's seven billionth person will be purely symbolic, given that thousands of babies are born every hour and it would be impossible to work out exactly which deserves the title.

But it is a demographic marker showing why the explosion in urban populations is so great: There are now twice as many people alive on earth as there were as recently as the 1960s.

And the six billionth child -- welcomed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Sarajevo, Bosnia on October 12 1999 -- is only 11 years old.

On the question of whether the millions heading for the cities are indeed likely to have the better life they seek, many experts are surprisingly upbeat despite the fact that humanity has never before faced such rapid urban growth.

The problems thrown up by this population explosion are huge -- from wretched slums, disease and crime to noxious pollution, overwhelmed infrastructure and crippling congestion.

But great cities have driven human development since the days of classical Athens and ancient Rome and are potent engines of social and economic development, the experts say.

"The most powerful places on the planet are cities, where knowledge and information is stored, where there is political administration, where ideas are disseminated from," Australian demographer and author Bernard Salt told AFP.

"It all comes from the frisson of having the best and the brightest coagulated together in a city environment."

Harvard professor Edward Glaeser sums up his opinion in the title of his book published this year: "Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier."

"In the world's poorer places, cities are expanding enormously because urban density provides the clearest path from poverty to prosperity," he writes.

But an upheaval of such magnitude will not be without its casualties.

"The transition from rural to urban does not automatically lead to middle-class prosperity, there are many that fall along the wayside," says Salt.

"This is exactly the same process that occurred in Britain during the Industrial Revolution from 1780 to 1840 -- there was tremendous human misery."

Already in Asia "cities and towns are places where poverty and disparities are most concentrated and visible", says the UN's Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

"Over 40 percent of Asia-Pacific's urban residents live in slums, without access to adequate shelter and basic services, income opportunities and decision-making."

The ADB points out that visitors to many Asian cities are shocked by the uncollected garbage, the traffic congestion, the beggars and the squalid living conditions of vast squatter areas.

But "the leaps made by European and American cities will likely be repeated in the developing cities of the 21st Century," Glaeser predicts.

"The urban victories over crime and disease made it possible for cities to thrive as places of pleasure as well as productivity. Urban scale makes it possible to support the fixed costs of theatres, museums and restaurants."

While city-slickers in the West may weary of the conspicuous consumption and stress of city life and, ironically, seek a less materialistic lifestyle in the countryside or on the coast, that in itself is a luxury, says Salt.

"It is an element in Western society where people say all the material goods, worldly success, it doesn't mean anything. I'm not sure people in Guangzhou or Shanghai would be pontificating about the shallowness of consumption."

Clean, efficient cities in countries such as Canada, Switzerland and Australia regularly make the top ranks of the most liveable in the world -- but critics say that does not necessarily make them the most loveable.

"I think what makes a city a desirable, exciting place to be is where there is complexity where there is richness, where there is unexpectedness -- the opposite of the calm village life," says Professor Ricky Burdett, founder of the London School of Economics' Cities Programme.

"In Asia on the whole, in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and other wealthy or more balanced states, the growth and urbanisation has come with increased quality of life," Burdett told AFP.

"I am incredibly optimistic about cities, anywhere in the world," he said, with people in cities more likely to have access to education than those in the countryside.

"If you are educated, it is the first step to everything -- it is the first step to economic and social well-being and also health."

But the seven billionth person will have a lot of people hard on his or her heels competing for that education and that job in the city -- the world's eighth billionth person is due to arrive on June 15 2025.

Why Couples Decide to Be Child-Free?

Studies suggest that a child-free marriage might be more satisfying for some because the arrival of children often creates a crisis for the couple involved. Yet this long-term decision requires serious conversation before it is set in stone.

Ten years ago, when Dave and Jacqui Alegria first tied the knot, their large Hispanic family eagerly anticipated a baby within the first year of their marriage. And the family waited. And worried. And waited.

“Our families are pretty much used to it by now,” says Louisiana resident Dave Alegria, now 32 years old. “Back in the day, every time we’d visit, they’d say ‘When will you have kids?’” But the newlywed Alegrias were determined to live child-free.

In actuality, their decision to be childless was not fully articulated at the beginning of their marriage. “We thought that ‘not right away, but soon’ we’d have kids,” he explains. “We kept putting it off and putting it off. We said, let’s have fun and have kids afterward — we’ve been enjoying ourselves.” He and Jacqui, also 32, continue to enjoy their childless lifestyle — vacationing with other child-free couples, sleeping in, and spending money as they like.

Alegria appreciates spending time with the children in his wide circle of friends and relations, but says he also enjoys sending them back to their parents at the end of a visit. Meanwhile, he and his wife are free to fly off to Disney World, the Caribbean, and any other destination they want to visit. They recently spent New Year’s weekend in Key West with friends, a trip that he knows wouldn’t have been the same with children.

The Alegrias’ feeling that their marriage would be changed by children is accurate. Intuitively, most couples know this. What comes as a surprise to many is that the change may be, in fact, a negative one. A recent study of 218 couples during the first eight years of marriage provided evidence that marital satisfaction decreases with the arrival of a child and can take a long time to return, if it comes back at all.

Making the Decision

Many couples like the Alegrias choose to live childless for a variety of reasons.

“I think that the reasons couples make the choice to be child-free are as varied as the reasons other couples want to have children,” says marriage and family therapist Catherine Hastings, PhD, who practices in Lancaster, Pa. “For some, both [partners] want to put all their energy into their careers. Others want the lifestyle — to travel and be spontaneous in their plans. Others had experiences in their childhood that color their decision to parent.”

Many couples are very satisfied with a childless lifestyle. Others may find the decision more difficult. Hastings points out that the biggest problems arise when one member of a couple is afraid to discuss the issue with their partner, either to speak up about a desire for children or to advocate for a child-free marriage.

“If you’re afraid to talk about it, that’s a red flag,” she says. Both partners should be able to talk about the topic and feel safe that their opinions are listened to and respected. Unlike many other decisions a couple makes, being child-free is a choice that’s hard to change after a certain point in a marriage. Couples who are having a difficult time either making or living with this decision should seek professional help.

“What feels like an okay decision at a certain stage feels different when you are older,” says Hastings, pointing out that even couples who are basically satisfied with being child-free may feel a twinge of regret during certain family-oriented holidays or when friends with children reach milestones, including the arrival of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Also, she says, the decision to be child-free may be easier in certain communities. Small towns with a strong family orientation can unintentionally leave child-free couples feeling ostracized, while diverse urban areas are often more welcoming to the childless couple. Ultimately, says Hastings, the decision is personal to each couple and even to each person in the couple.

Alegria agrees. “Don’t let anybody influence you,” he advises. Although he acknowledges there may never be a perfect time to have children, he says that almost everyone he talks to has regrets about the timing of their children or the number of children. But he and his wife have no regrets about the way they have managed their child-free marriage. “Choose your own life, whether it be to have children or not,” he suggests.

Night Clean-over

I began the first time night clean-over out of no where on earth knows what I was doing. One hour after my dinner, I have been blurring and wondering why something was not right with myself. On that instant, I went to the bathroom with an empty container, filled it with water and put in the water into the air filter. Then, I went to the bathroom again, fill a bigger container with water, opened a brand new lavender soap and began to clean up my room.

My room was in a total mess, dirty and ugly. I have time to do it but I just don't get my butt(ocks) kicked up to make it done. Even I supposed to make myself wash my shoes but I also had yet to do it. I have been doing layout things for my blog and to assure that my blog stay as its best.

For almost 4 months, I haven't change my bed sheet. I also has been not washing my table fan for many months. That time was the time for me to do all things. When my mother came into my room, my mother asked me to use anti-ants liquid to wipe tables and cupboard. I went to the toilet and changed the water and refilled it with clean water.

My mother poured a bit of the liquid into the container and I started to wipe the tables and cupboards one more time. The leftover I used it to mop the floor after I had changed my bed sheet. When I look everything back to the finest, I turned on the air-conditioner and went downstairs to eat a piece of fried chicken.

I was cleaning my room while I was watching WWE Smackdown from the web. However, I might need new computer chair and a computer table. When I'm going to have time next time, I will be changing my computer table to the site where the window is, due to connection problem. Hopefully, that one day will not come because I hope that TM's UniFi will be here soon.

Lastly, I still need to fold my clothes and wash my shoes tomorrow (today) after I went to the church. I will be going to church (proper) for the first time after many years and with hopes that will stay in that church. I will be going to the church where Joshua and Maverick are attending and I went there under the invitation of Joshua.

Too much for me to handle

This past Thursday was a terrible day in my life. I was unable to update the latest happening because of these things that happened to me. Thanks to friends that had supported me when I was in need to prevent me from doing stupid things. I also wanted to thanked my Lord and Saviour, Chris Jesus for giving me comfort when I was in a total broke down.

Problem 1
I was helping my boss to take care of the cat, so that she can have the cat's claws to cut short. Gareth (previously misspell as Gerreth) and I went there and it was already my second visit after I helped with the cat sands along with Ryhan and Kuang as their punishment. The cat was defensive and the workers of the pet shop unable to get her nails (claws) cut short.

We were about to go off but I called up my boss to inform her about it. At that time, one of my former friends from Kuala Ampang - Kent (my friend since kindergarten). Both Kent and I had a quick chat before we left. However, Gareth without knowing anything, went and talked to him.

Is it time for me to not stay hiding from them? Is it time for me to come out from the exile of the King of Kids of Kuala Ampang? Hope that God will guide me in this matter.

Problem 2
My family had split apart after my father had left the family due to unwillingness to pay for the expenses of my family. My parents might had an argument about it when I went to work. My father took some of his shirts and went to his mistress' house soon after he came back from work.

This was also due to my mother became jobless after my aunt took my cousin away without giving any early notices - even my mother called her up a night before she (with my uncle) came and took my cousin away, gave an excuse and said, she needs to go to kindergarten.

I don't know what to do and I started to feel guilty. At the same time, I am also feel hurt because many things came after me, no matter how good I handled my problems. With previous problems I had been facing and my father departure, I can't really do anything anymore.

I told my sister-in-Christ about it and she asked me to stay strong and pray to Him. When the conversation keeps on, I cried and unable to control my emotions. The next day, when my employer asked what had happened with my family for not able to celebrate Chinese New Year this year, again I cried in front of my employer. She also gave me words of encouragement for me to stand tall and hold on to my feet.

Aftermath
1. Last night, I had a dream which I received two keys. (which looks like Tri-circle keys).

2. My father still return return home but will go to his mistress' house soon after.

3. My stress has been released after I went out with Rex (my buddy) yesterday afternoon.

My Different Dongzhi Festival

Peanut tangyuan (or glutinous rice balls) - Source from: QQ Love In The Kitchen
Once a year, my family supposedly to make tangyuan by buying a pack or two glutinous rice flour on Chinese Winter Solstice (or Dong Zhi Festival). Although my family and relatives practically will held the reunion dinner a week or two weeks later after the festival, but I am still enjoying the taste of tangyuan.

Normally my mother and I will roll the flour into ball. To make the red (pink) one, my mother will put a few drops of red colouring onto the flour. My mother also will later that evening, to boil a pot of soup contained pandan grasses, gingers and sugar.

However, I asked my mother to try something special this year. I told her to try to get those pack of glutinous rice balls (already made, packed and can be found everywhere) and have a try. Since I told my mother about it, she also decided to replace the soup that we had been doing for almost 23 years to red bean desserts.

I would still preferred the traditional one (soup) and I can understand that my mother unable to make the glutinous rice balls with my cousin in the house, disturb everything that she can see. I tried it just now and found out that I cannot hold myself to drink the traditional soup for real. The red bean dessert caused me to have a full stomach, some more when I just finished my dinner.

Condolence

Dear Ping Chee Hong and Ping Chee Keong,

I am sorry to hear about father's death. Our family is still in shock, especially that we just saw the newspaper regarding his death.

I cannot imagine the pain of losing a father, much more at the peak of your career and education. We will definitely miss him. Our family extending their deepest sympathies to you and your family.

It has been around 10 years since I got to know you all, although we most probably forget each others' face. I hope his smiles will somehow bring back good memories.

You and your family will always be in my prayers.

From Uncle Wong's family.

Facts:
The owner of Restoran Makanan Laut Lai Fatt Ikan Bakar Brickfield has passed away recently. The owner was former employer of my father and he is also my family's friend. Chee Hong and Chee Keong and one of their sister were my childhood friends.

Three of them with both myself and my real-life brother always play together at my birthplace, Brickfield. To be precise, their house is just beside Brickfield Monorail station, above Rose Pub.

Mie Sedaap... my favourite

Mie Sedaap is an instant noodle made by Wings Food, Indonesia. It is second most popular instant noodles brand in that country. Well, we also often heard the song of "Mie Sedaaapppp!!!" during commercial.

I've been eating Mie Sedaap for quite a while. Almost 2 years I think. Mie Sedaap is the cheapest instant noodles you can find in my housing area's 99 Supermarket.

Just RM3, you can buy it and have a nice taste of it. Once you had taste it, especially the Kriuk Kriuk - sure you will get addicted with it. Although my parents do not like much of Mie Sedaap, I still insist to have Mie Sedaap every time I went to the supermarket. My family preferred to have Mamee Vegetarian flavor.

Nowdays, every thing get expensive. Nevertheless, brands like Mamee, Maggi and Cintan really unable to afford people with low money income. To me, Mie Sedaap's taste can be parred with these companies.

Recently, I took Mie Sedaap as supper. Yeah! The taste of it never fade away from my nose. I can almost smell it every time too. If you haven't try it, take it as your shopping list next time. Then you will know how was my feeling after eating it.

My recipe
Actually I like the original taste of it. I will only add-in sesame oil, white pepper powder and my family's fried onion. In case that you want to cook 2 noodles but you have only one pack of the ingredients inside it, you can always repeat the same thing as above and you can also add-in dark soy sauce and chill sauce. Of course, if you want to add an egg also will not be a big problem too.

Bad service from Pizza Hut JJ Cheras Selatan

This afternoon, my mother asked me to prepare and take my bath as my brother's girlfriend was coming. She will take all of us (except my father) to eat lunch. As I delaying myself in front of the laptop, I was also wasting my time.

When I were done, I went down to read newspaper to catch-up the latest news. Both my brother and his girlfriend were also delaying their time in their room.

They planned to go and eat chicken rice at their friend's shop. We started to move and went through Taman Belimbing Jaya (which I attempted to cycle around that area previously). However, the shop already without chickens. The only thing left was BBQ porks. I proposed and said that "Go and eat Pizza Hut!" which later got a reply, "are you going to treat?".

Of course, they were tempted when they no need to pay. They go to AEON Jaya Jusco Cheras Selatan. We took a long time to get parkings in that shopping complex. After we got a space to park, we stopped at Pizza Hut.

That 'hut' having many Indian employees. We also ordered "Meaty Deluxe" which consisted - a LARGE pepperoni chicken meat balls pizza, 4 chicken cream soups, 4 garlic sticks and a jar of 7UP Revive. It came from the garlic sticks, followed by chicken cream soups, then the 7UP and at last the pizza.

However, the pizza was a bit wet and the meat balls were disgusting. The taste of the meat balls were ridiculous. The pizza also like not fully cooked.

To continue on, even we pressed the 'bill' button on the table, no one came to us. I even go to the counter and they were busy with phone calls, serving customers and pack pizzas. Are the 'hut' only have a few people working? Why no other people came out and help? Even the supervisor not doing her job properly. I stand there for almost 10 minutes only they served me. What kind of 'hut' which deserve to be A-Graded restaurant?

Supporting Earth Hour 2010

In support to the Earth Hour 2010, I made a poster (which wasn't copyrighted. WWF, please don't sue me) to let people know that I am actually supporting it. Maybe a bit of showing off, I used MJ's 'Heal the world' lyrics as the header of the poster. As you know that I made the "60 Earth Hour logo" and posted it on my blog too.

My family however still will discuss the supporting matter because Connie might scare if the lights are off. I don't know about my workplace either will support it or not too. For my blog, I might try my best to link my blog to a stand-out page which will be design soon.

This year's Earth Hour will not only aimed on 1 billion - according to the population but must be stressed by everyone about the importance of saving our earth. I will print few of the posters and paste it in my house.

You? Will you support it?

As an environment lover, I decided to put some affords to make my house to go green too. Although my house already had enough of tree and plants, I need to asked my family to do the same. As for now, newspapers, papers and "rough" papers will be sent for recycling. My father's workplace also might throw some too, so my father took it to recycle as well. Bill draft paper (which only the front was printed) and the back of the bill are blank. The blank space can be use as notes. Rain water will be keep for cleaning. And will be much more to come...
